In the catalogue of Alfred Hill’s music, this has the identifier 1.2.2.1 MTr1.

Hill was professor of harmony and composition at the State Conservatorium of Music, Sydney, from its commencement in 1916 until he retired in 1935. He composed a number of works for his students there, including some technically undemanding but nonetheless charming chamber and orchestral music and this trio was probably written for that purpose. The original instrumentation would doubtless have been pianoforte, violin, and violoncello but Hill’s part for clarinet in lieu of violin provides a very workable alternative. While the exact date and place of composition are unknown, a manuscript for Miniature Trio No.2 in C Major (subtitled “Preparatory Studies in Chamber Music”) is dated August 1918, suggesting that it was created in1916, 1917, or 1918.
